In a couple of ways, depending on the type of virus. First a virus must attach itself to the outside of the cell. Then it can either inject its genetic code straight into the cell (otherwise staying outside). Or the outside of the virus can merge with the cell (like two bubbles merging) releasing its genetic code into the cell. Or the virus can trick the cell into thinking it is a nutrient and get the cell to pull it inside itself.
